get coffee out of your car seat cover

On a long drive stopping for a coffee in your car is not a bad idea.  Spilling that cup of coffee isn't a good idea. That doesn't mean your seat covers have to be immediately ruined. Here is a little guide on how to remove the coffee stains efficiently and keep fresh and clean seat covers.

Why Coffee Stains Can Be Tricky for Car Seat Covers

Tannins are organic compounds that exist in lots of plants, including coffee, tea, and wine. It is what makes both coffee and the above-mentioned items black and causes stains.  Basically it makes the discolorations really hard to clean up. The heat of the coffee can also set the stain more quickly if the spill isn't dealt with right away.

Step 1: Act Fast

The first and foremost thing to do in case of a coffee spill is to act really fast. Just after the spill, take a clean, absorbable cloth or paper towel, gently blotting it. What you are doing here is soaking up as much liquid as possible without moving the stain further. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing at this stage as that could get the stain deep into the fabric.

Step 2: Prepare a Gentle Cleaning Solution

After all excess coffee has been absorbed, you will need to prepare a cleaning solution. For most of the fabrics, it contains only a softly mixed mild dish soap and warm water. Mix a few drops of dish soap into a small bowl with a cup of warm water. The warm water will help loosen up the stain; the soap itself will break down oils and other components in the coffee.

Test the solution on an inconspicuous area of the seat cover before applying it to the stain; this will ensure that it won't discolor or otherwise ruin the fabric.

Step 3: Apply the cleaning solution

Also, dipping a clean cloth into soapy water and then gently blotting from the edges of the stain inwards will help contain it and prevent spreading. As you are dabbing, the coffee stain should be gradually lifting off the fabric and onto the cloth.

If the stain is extremely tough, you can increase the pressure slightly, but be very careful not to rub too hard, because you might damage the fabric or cause it to pill.

Step 4: Rinse and blot

After treating the offending mark with the soapy solution, you will need to rinse out the area from any soap residue. Otherwise, the soap can ultimately attract dirt and give it a new mark if not removed from the fabric. You will do your rinsing then by getting another clean cloth dampened with plain water, blotting the area until all traces of soap have been removed. Then, dampen an area after rinsing with a dry cloth by soaking up as much moisture as possible. Blotting and not rubbing will help retain the texture and look of the fabric.

Step 5: Air Dry Thoroughly

Allow the seat cover to dry completely before returning to normal use. If at all possible, try to keep the seat cover out of direct light, as this can eventually cause some fabric materials to fade or turn brittle. Rather, find a well-ventilated place and let the cover dry.

If in a hurry a fan (or even a hairdryer) can be placed at a very low setting just to hurry the process of drying, but be sure to do it in a low setting because high heat can burn this fabric.

Step 6: Dealing with Stubborn Stains

In some cases, especially if the coffee is dried or if spillage has sat for days before it was cleaned, the stain could still remain after your first attempt in cleaning it. To get rid of more persistent stains, you can apply a fabric cleaner on the seat that is explicitly compatible with the type of seat material. Not to forget, read the manufacturer's instructions and test on an inconspicuous spot beforehand.

If you would rather go the natural route, you can combine vinegar and water or whip up a paste of baking soda, apply, leave for some minutes, and blot with a wet cloth.

How to Avoid Coffee Stains on Car Seat Covers

Add a fabric protector to your covers for an easier time cleaning future spills of coffee. Something like a Scotchgard will repel liquid from the surface, making it easy to do the cleaning. Reapply the fabric protector every time you clean the seat. Also, a good travel mug with a good lid would do a lot. Have some wet car cleaning wipes ready if there are any spills, and choose the color of seat covers that won't show a stain easily.

A car coffee spill is not the end of the world. Quick action and the right cleaning techniques can keep your Saddleman seat covers looking brand new. Regular maintenance, prompt attention to spills, and a little preventative care will ensure that your seat covers look fresh and clean for years to come.
